Raised in a machine shop with a dessert/motocross racer dad. I always dreamed of designing parts that racers would use. Lost a chunk of hair from my head, almost lost a thumb and crushed a finger in the process.
Early days and start of motorcycle tank grips; Dad would tell us, “stand up, grip the bike with your legs and ride smooth”. First set of tank grips was on my 1978 YZ 80. Made from rubber conveyer belt and contact cement. Worked well, but I wanted more grip. Tried grip tape. Worked good but tore up my pants and boots up. Back to rubber conveyer belt. Fast forward to 1996. Frame guards milled out of rubber conveyer belt and bolted/zip tied/hose clamped to the frame. Worked good, but wanted more grip. Then it came to me. Riding in the hills of Santa Cruze, CA with my girlfriend on the back of my 1989 Honda 650 Night Hawk with Renthal MX bars. Came into a corner hot and I noticed I was working harder to keep my girl back and maintain my seat position than I was on rolling through the corner. LIGHT BULB. Why not put some rubber patches on the tank at point of contact with my knees. Motorcycle tank grips. The journey began!
