Mountain Music Parlor, Reno’s very first Early American Music School, Folk Instrument Shoppe and Listening Room all geared towards enhancing the cultural vitality of the community while helping to preserve the deep rooted music of American heritage. A trifecta with benefits!
Founders/visionaries, Renee and Donald Lauderback, believe that a country devoid of its heritage music comes unglued at its core. They see music’s potential to teach, nurture and reconnect the rich past with the future and are passionate to share the bounty.
Housed in a 110 year old Arts N Craft bungalow, Mountain Music Parlor much like Folk Music Schools that dot the country, offers private group lessons and workshops year round. Be it fiddle, claw hammer banjo, mandolin, dulcimer or Native American flute, guitar, even Appalachian Clogging and Tin Whistle, the realm of learning is made available. The MMP Teacher Team shares the same passion and come student recital time, the fruits of their efforts shine bright!
To support both students and community, each month 8 different Jams take place welcoming all ages and skill levels of players, even just listeners wanting to experience the great music. From Cowboy, Old time and Bluegrass to Celtic sessions, accordion and hawaiian Ukulele, the selection keeps growing! Renee’s bucket list of ideas never stops, and she’s currently working on starting up a Barber Shop Choir, Kids Fiddle and Ukulele clubs!
Believing in supporting American music also means supporting the American instrument makers and Renee goes to great lengths hunting the country for those who still handmake the good stuff. Her Folk Music Shoppe is packed with dulcimers, banjos, flutes and more all made up in the woods, barns and basements of America. Certainly instruments that will be loved and become family treasures.
And, if that wasn’t enough, Heritage Hall, MMP’s Listening Room is where top notch performing artists come to play. From Old time music Grand Champions, dedicated Cowboy Songsters, Bluegrass IBMA award winners, culturally steeped fiddlers, flute, folk harp and mandolin masters, this cozy 50 seat venue is just what they crave to play in so their audience gets the immersion that’s intended.
So unique to Reno and different from modern music schools, it’s apparent that traditional heritage music is not just taught at Mountain Music Parlor but honored and appreciated. Families who’ve found this wonderful little music house boast of the treasure it is and gather there often to partake in all it has to offer. It’s the perfect place to be inspired, learn, make a new friend or just come have a friendly cup of coffee while perusing the book racks or trying out a mandolin.
Their mission statement to which they strictly adhere is: To teach, preserve, inspire and pass on America’s grassroots music.
It’s musical passion in motion, contagious and happily taking root!
